Jane had worked as a cleaner for the same company in Manchester City Centre for over 15 years. The work was seasonal and she would not work throughout the summer holidays, and then be taken on every September again by the same company on a new contract.
“It suited me fine. I could spend extra time with the kids during the summer holidays and we could take a weekend away as a family at any time we wanted during the summer break.”
When Jane was working in spring 2005 she heard rumours that some of the cleaning staff were going to be made redundant. She was never consulted or told anything.
“They just gave me my last pay packet and said they would not be re-hiring me after the summer break, as the cleaning had been outsourced to a specialist cleaning company. They had the cheek to tell me that perhaps I should ring up and ask if they had any jobs going. I asked about redundancy pay, but they said that because of the break I had technically only worked there since September 2004, and I wasn’t entitled to any redundancy pay. After 15 years service I was devastated. I just left without saying a word as I didn’t know whether what they had told me was true”
